Since casual smokers are still hazy on the definition of the term “solventless,” before we get into this review of Jetty Extracts’ excellent new solventless line of concentrates, vapes, and infused pre-rolls, let’s talk about what it really means for a product to be considered solventless. If you’re already familiar with solventless products, skip ahead to the juicy part of this product review.
What does ‘solventless’ mean?
Solventless refers to a type of cannabis concentrate. When a product that isn’t a concentrate is called “solventless,” like a gummy or a pre-roll, that means the cannabis used in the product has been extracted using the solventless extraction method.
Solvent extractions employ a solvent, like C02 or a hydrocarbon like butane, to separate the active ingredients from plant matter with advanced scientific equipment, and are called “extracts.” This process produces substances that are far more pure, like resins, shatters, badders, etc. Solventless extractions, on the other hand, only use water, agitation, heat, and pressure to separate the active ingredients from plant matter, and are called “concentrates.” These produce unrefined concentrates like kief, rosin, dry sift, and bubble hash, which still contain a good deal of plant matter.
The misconception about solventless products lies in the assumption that because they don’t use chemicals to produce them, they are healthier or better for you than solvent extractions. This is not true. Solvent extractions actually produce cleaner, lighter extracts than solventless extractions, which contain a lot of plant matter and are, for the most part, heavier to consume. While the concept that’s driving the public’s infatuation with solventless products may be flawed, that’s not to say that solventless is worse than solvent extractions. Both are good as long as the flower used in the extraction process is high-quality, and the extractor knows what they’re doing. Fire in, fire out, as they say.
First impression
Known for being a solvent brand throughout the years, Jetty’s foray into solventless is surely a sign of the times. However, unlike many solventless brands, who don’t know what they’re doing and obtain flower from questionable sources, Jetty is trustworthy, knowledgeable, and exactly the kind of brand you want producing your trendy concentrates.
My first impression of the new solventless line was literally, “Oh sick, Jetty has a solventless line now.” While I don’t usually care when extract brands foray into solventless, I’ve been a fan of Jetty long enough to remember being impressed by its distillate products. Founded in 2013, Jetty is a true OG in the cannabis space, so I inherently trust that whatever products it produces, it’s going to be high quality and affordable.
Jetty’s solventless line consists of three product types: one-gram concentrates, one-gram vape cartridges, and infused pre-rolls. For today’s review, I’ll be discussing the Papaya Live Rosin, the Banana Creme vape cartridge, and the Monster Cookies flower x Garlic Cookies hash pre-roll.
Papaya Live Rosin
The aroma of this Papaya Live Rosin is gorgeous. Wild and terpy, it’s bursting with fruity, playful aromas that invite you in on a tropical secret. The color is soft and sunny, like the juice of a ripe mango. Together, the initial experience makes me feel excited to give it a try.
I dabbed it with my Puffco Peak Pro on medium heat to experience the full range of flavors. Fruity and earthy, my eyelids got heavy immediately. Giddy waves of excitement coursed through my body as I wrote this review and I couldn’t wait to do something fun. This would be an awesome companion for a day off by the pool or hanging out with friends—any activity where you can enjoy yourself and this amazing high to the fullest.
Banana Creme Cartridge
Full disclosure: this is one of the best vape carts I’ve ever tried. Like all cartridges, Jetty’s one-gram Banana Creme cart doesn’t have an aroma. It does have a look, however, and an impressive one at that. With its dark wooden mouthpiece and bright, honey-colored oil, everything about this cartridge screams quality.
Fruity, exciting, and dynamic, the flavor of this cartridge transports you to a warm and windless beach. It made me rethink my stance on vaping altogether, as it’s not usually something I’m excited about. The high hits immediately, buoyant and euphoric, making me feel relaxed and at ease as the rain falls outside my window pane.
Monster Cookie Flower x Garlic Cookies Hash Infused Pre-roll
When I popped open this pre-roll tube, an aromatic wave, at once spicy, earthy, and sweet, made me feel happy, as only good pre-rolls smell outside the paper. I took a dry hit, inhaling the joint before it’s lit to experience the terpene profile, which was more earthy than anything, and not quite as exciting as the smell. The structural integrity of the joint was solid, and it was a nice, big joint, too.
I lit it, which hit well but was a little tight at first. The earthy, spicy flavor of the dry hit translated to the smoke, another sign of a good smoke. Strong notes of myrcene and caryophyllene tipped me off that I was about to chill way the fuck out. Languid, relaxing, silly, and fun, this is a great pre-roll for unwinding after a long day, and generally geared more towards enjoying at the end of the day rather than the beginning.
Bottom line
Though solventless isn’t the silver bullet of new-age concentrate consumption the industry would like you to believe it is, it’s still an incredible way to experience the plant in its most condensed, truest form. While solvents may produce extracts that are purer, nature never intended for the plant to be run through a closed-loop system or doused in butane before consumption. There’s something wholesome-feeling about the fact that nothing has touched these kinds of concentrates but ice water, heat, and pressure, so I see where the hype is coming from.
At the end of the day, Jetty Extracts is an extremely reputable brand that’s totally killed it with this solventless line, reminding us that when it comes to extraction, and the world at large, it matters less how you do it, and more that it’s done right.
